5. If relocation is an option, sit down with your realtor and your banker before you start the search. Determine your home’s salability and likely time on the market and understand your equity and credit worthiness so you’ll be prepared to assess your options in other geographies.

3. Reconnect with your references. Confirm their contact information and their willingness to speak on your behalf.

Choose your references wisely. Past managers, board members, peers and customers are all good sources, but only if they can speak to your performance and contributions in a previous position. An effusive, over the top reference can be as big a problem as a negative reference, so don’t ask them to second guess the person conducting the reference. After doing thousands of references, I can state without equivocation that what may be perceived as a negative in one situation may be perceived as a positive in another. Encourage your references to be frank and honest.
