Ask the Expert
Q.Is it OK to inflate my currrent salary when I’m asked about comp during an interview? I’m currently underpaid and don’t want the new company using my current salary as the basis for their offer.
A. In a word, “NO.” Your current salary is a matter of fact. You may, however, qualify your answer by providing some context. For example, “ABC is a start up, and I was promised significant equity as part of my compensation. My actual salary is $XX. ”
