Job Search Coach: Resumes
What is a resume, really? It’s a marketing document. Its sole purpose is to get you an interview. It is perfectly acceptable to have more than one version of your resume, highlighting different aspects of your experience, provided the content is completely accurate.
Reverse chronological order, with a brief career summary at the top is generally the preferred format. In most instances functional resumes are ineffective.
Virtually everyone involved in hiring uses some sort of parsing software to get resume content into a database. For that reason the resume format should be straightforward and clean. Don’t use non-standard layouts or fonts, and don’t use headers or footers.
It is generally appropriate to send your resume as an attachment, either .doc or .rtf You may wish to paste it into the body of the email for those who have difficulty with attachments. Be aware that pasted resumes lose their formatting.
